Between 2007 and 2011, Ghana’s cassava production has seen a steady but marginal annual growth. The Ministry of Food and Agriculture’s production statistics show that in 2007 total cassava produced was a little over 10.2 million MT; 11.3 million MT in 2008; 12.2 million MT in 2009; 13.5 million MT in 2010; and 14.2 million in 2011. However, domestic consumption is about 4 million MT means what is left is inadequate to meet both domestic processing and export. Cassava processing dominated by individual small and microprocessors using elementary tools mainly to produce products such as gari, kokonte and agbelima with tapioca and starch as byproducts to feed the domestic market.
Cassava farming and processing like most other crops in Ghana is done by poor rural individual smallholder farmers mostly on subsistence basis with very limited access to the resources that would ease a shift to modern, commercial agriculture. These farmers are disaggregated; posing a hefty challenge for bodies willing to extend support for their activities. But most importantly, it poses a challenge for cassava buyers, on the one hand, in terms of transport cost to the different individual farms and cassava farmers on the other hand, in terms of the huge post-harvest losses witnessed due to delays.
